Does Cellulite Treatment Cream and Lotion Really Work?

Cellulite. Dimples on the legs, buttocks, and hips. Cottage cheese appearance. These terms and descriptions are very familiar to most women in the world, regardless of their size. While men can also possess cellulite, it tends to show itself more in women, and although excess weight and lack of exercise can contribute to the problem, even those in great shape deal with the issue.

The lumpy deposits of fat underneath the skin seem to increase with age, as skin loosens, which tends to show off the dimples even more. Many have tried injections, laser removal, liposuction, shock treatment, and various creams and lotions to try and get rid of cellulite, although there is no medical evidence suggesting any of these options will effectively rid the body of the fat deposits. Since many of the options are very expensive, many women hoping to rid their legs and buttocks of unflattering dimples turn to creams and lotions as a potential solution.

Creams and lotions that claim to rid the body of cellulite are manufactured by many different companies and can be found in many price ranges. Most of the creams use some of the same ingredients that claim to put an end to cellulite. Caffeine, retinol, the antioxidant DMAE, and L-Carnitine are some of the common products found in the lotions.

Caffeine, which acts as a diuretic, causes blood to flow to the skin, which in turn removes moisture from it. The results are a firmer appearance of the skin, causing the dimples or patches of cellulite to seem lessened. The fix from caffeine is temporary, just as the effects of caffeine are temporary when ingested.

Retionol, on the other hand, is supposed to make skin thicker through penetrating the skin, exfoliating it, and increasing the production of collagen in the body. The problem with retinol however, is that using it too much can cause the skin to dry out and become very red, and even peel. Because of this, many creams limit the amount of retinol that they contain.

The antioxidant DMAE is derived from fish. When combined with amino acids the result is supposed to be a contraction of muscles, which in turn increases firmness. L-Carnitine is a natural compound in our bodies that is used to break down fats. By adding supplements of L-Carnitine in the lotions, the fatty deposits underneath the skin should be broken down more easily.

While all of these ingredients have the potential of putting an end to cellulite, medically it has not been proven. There are plenty of people and companies that claim the lotions and creams work, and while that may very well be true for some, it is certainly a temporary fix. Most lotions will have instructions that detail results will not be seen without daily usage for at least four weeks. Even after the initial four weeks, a person would have to continue with the creams daily to continue seeing results. Failure to use the cream will result in the cellulite returning. Considering many of the creams and lotions are very expensive, long-term use is not always an option for everyone.

Unfortunately, there is no miracle to putting an end to cellulite. Creams and lotions certainly may reduce the appearance of cellulite when used long-term. However, there is nothing proven that any of these products will completely rid the body of the fat deposits that make up cellulite.
